The Watch Exercise

Watching the Watch

Purpose: To discover and do research on the current state of our attention.

Materials: Watch (preferably with a second hand), 1 to 5 minutes of time.

Exercise:

Place your attention on the second-hand of a watch for a minute. Keep it there for the full duration without allowing it to wander.

Rest.

"In other words, if we look at the second hand on a clock for one minute, at first what we will be trying to do is just keep our attention from wandering off the second hand. We will be surprised at how difficult it is to do this! Sixty seconds of simple presence. not even ‘invoked’ presence is very difficult! We’re not even talking about consciousness-just simple awareness."
